Kaiser Canyon Fire, Colville Agency
AARON THOMPSON– INCIDENT COMMANDER
Kaiser Canyon Fire Update
Colville Agency Monday, August 17, 2026
Fire Information Line: 509-800-8123 | Email: 2026.kaisercanyon@firenet.gov
Location: Nespelem, Colville Reservation, WA | Start Date: July 16, 2026
Cause: Lightning | Acres: 138,296 | Containment: 84% | Personnel: 560
Yesterday’s Activities: Firefighters continued to strengthen containment lines around the fire, checking for lingering heat and extinguishing hot spots that could threaten the perimeter. Crews mopped-up the 17-acre fire located below Moses Meadows near Disautel, cooling smoldering material and checking burned areas for pockets of fire. UAS flights over the northwestern portion of the fire, helped refine the perimeter and identify isolated heat sources.
Today’s Activities: Firefighters will monitor heat in the steep and inaccessible areas of Whitelaw Creek. When patrolling and monitoring a fire, crews check for heat, smoke or changes in fire behavior. Where accessible, crews will continue to mop-up and secure portions of the fireline and extinguish remaining hot spots. As sections of the fireline become secure, crews are backhauling hose, pumps and other equipment from areas where it is no longer needed. Whether engaged in mop-up, backhauling or monitoring and patrolling, firefighters remain prepared to respond to flare ups or new initial attack fires if needed.
Weather: A warming and drying trend in the region is gradually reducing the effects of last week’s wetting rain. Fuels will continue to dry, especially in sunny and exposed areas, increasing the potential for fire activity. Partly cloudy skies are expected today, with generally seasonal conditions persisting through the week.

Modrite Fire
Modrite Fire Update Monday, August 17
Location: Inchelium, WA
Start Date: July 17,2026
Cause: Lightning
Acres: 57,639
Containment: 83%
Personnel: 1,087
Yesterday’s Activities: Aggressive mop-up over the past week has continued reducing heat across the fire area. Hose was removed along the fire perimeter south of the Twin Lakes area. Crews north of Falls Creek reinforced hand line and chipping operations to reduce vegetation build up continued along the western edge.
Firefighters responded to an initial attack west of Nez Perce Creek near Wilmont Creek-Twin Lakes Road with air resources supporting ground crews with water drops. The fire is approximately 3 acres and 60% lined and crews continued to secure and mop-up the fire overnight.
Today’s Activities: Firefighters will continue to patrol and monitor the fire perimeter and backhaul fire suppression equipment. Along the southern edge of the fire, crews will remove hazard trees that may threaten containment lines or critical values. To address areas of scattered heat south of Nez Perce Creek, crews will install hoselays to bring water to the area and support mop-up efforts. Contingency line preparation along Gold Mountain Ridge is ongoing to build and efforts from yesterday’s initial attack response will continue today.
Weather: Temperatures will reach into the mid-80s today and continue to rise throughout the week. With relative humidity decreasing to around 25%, there is potential for flare ups and rekindling of drying vegetation. Smoke outlooks are available at https://outlooks.airfire.org/outlook/9b4664c3.
