The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation is currently under a 638 contract with the U.S. Department of Interior/Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Colville Tribal Realty Department functions under this contract. Recently, new personnel were hired to execute the mission of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The mission of the Bureau of Indian Affairs is to fulfill its trust responsibilities and promote self-determination on behalf of Tribal Governments, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives. How is federal recognition status conferred? Historically, most of today’s federally recognized tribes received federal recognition status through treaties, acts of Congress, presidential executive orders or other federal administrative actions, or federal court decisions.
